Meet . . . Linda Briesemeister
Focus @ SRI:
Modeling, simulation, design, and implementation of distributed systems, such as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks
Title:
Senior Research Engineer, Computer Science Laboratory
Day in the Life @ SRI:
I enjoy the combination of reading or thinking about a problem, and then working on the computer where I get to implement my thoughts. I participate in meetings where we update each other on projects, share ideas, and brainstorm. I like the experience of working with people all over the country (in some joint projects) and learning how to collaborate across the states using phone or video conferences.
Before SRI:
Working for four years at DaimlerChrysler Research Labs in Berlin and Palo Alto on vehicle-to-vehicle communication
Academics:
Ph.D. in computer science and engineering from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany
Why SRI?
Before applying for this job, I went to an Open House event at SRI and was impressed by the powerful and motivated testimonies from SRI employees.
Inspiration and Motivation:
Every time I am stuck on a problem, I find it very helpful to talk to someone. Around SRI, you'll find many open office doors and co-workers who are most helpful and willing to discuss and listen.
Away from the Office:
The San Francisco Bay Area has the best windsurfing sites (except maybe exotic locations like Hawaii) to offer. So, during the spring and early summer, you'll find my husband and me at a windy spot around the bay on most weekend days.
Languages:
German. As a native of northern Germany, it is very hard for me to understand Bavarians, other tribes in the south of Germany, Austrians, and Swiss people. But at least they understand me.
Proudest Professional Accomplishment:
Finishing my Ph.D. thesis (in Germany) while looking for a job in research related to wireless networking at an American company in the Bay Area right after the dot com crash . . . . Both were difficult, but I was ultimately successful.
Words of Wisdom for New SRI Team Members:
Take advantage of all the numerous ways to meet other people around the SRI campus such as gatherings and staff events organized by Human Resources and Staff Activities or seminars, training, "watering holes," you name it.
Favorites:
I love having the chance to catch German movies that are screened at theaters around San Francisco. The latest one I enjoyed was "Good Bye Lenin," which was filmed in and featured the city of Berlin, my wonderful hometown.
