Meet . . . Kurt Fulkerson

Focus @ SRI:
Business development in commercial markets and government agencies from my base in the Detroit-Metro area

Title:
Manager, Business Development, Transportation Markets

Day in the Life @ SRI:
I'm usually on the phone or meeting with customers to develop and qualify opportunities for licensing SRI intellectual property, and to develop leads for R&D collaboration that meets a defined need of the customer or market.

Before SRI:
I worked for four years at Texas Instruments as a design engineer in the Advanced Systems Program, five years at Raytheon as a systems engineer, and six years at MPSI (an automotive supplier) where I held management positions in engineering and business/product development.

Academics:
B.S. in electrical engineering and B.S. in mathematics, Lawrence Technological University in Michigan

Why SRI?
Working at SRI gives me an opportunity to represent a broad portfolio of intellectual property and world-leading R&D capabilities to our customers in ways that can have a substantial impact on their product performance and ultimately on their bottom line.

Inspiration and Motivation:
Working with a client to define a new product and then being involved in the process to bring that product to market is my motivation. The process can be long and difficult at times, but watching your team's ideas unfold and evolve in terms of a new product that your customers (and their customers) find valuable is very rewarding because you know that you had a part to play in it.

Away from the Office:
Mostly, I try to keep up with my twin boys (age 10), who seem to have a perpetual source of energy. My wife and I also volunteer a lot of our time in community and school activities. When I have time to myself, I get together with friends on the golf course, where I try to stay away from sand traps and ponds.

Languages:
English and restaurant Spanish

Proudest Professional Accomplishment:
On my first major project with Texas Instruments, I asked for and was given an 18-month assignment to design an embedded control capability for a large Department of Defense data collection system. Many engineers with more experience could have been assigned to that project, given the critical nature of the schedule. I convinced my management I would do whatever was required to meet the technical and schedule objectives. After a multitude of customer-initiated changes in scope and lots of late nights and lost weekends, I was able to keep my commitment to those people who put an awful lot of faith in me. I felt pretty proud about that and very appreciative.

Words of Wisdom for New SRI Team Members:
Business development is a “team sport.” Don't be afraid to ask for help, because you have a great team around you. Listen to your customers. Perseverance pays off.

Favorites:
Motown music and antique/historic cars
