Meet . . .Walt Kyle
Focus @ SRI:
I develop and implement policies and practices to meet client needs, protect SRI confidential business information, and communicate security awareness to the staff.
Title:
Supervisor, Information Protection, Corporate Security Department
Day in the Life @ SRI:
I usually arrive before 7:00 a.m., and the workdays are never the same. I may be working mostly on government requirements, for example, conducting an inquiry into mishandling classified information, briefing a staff member granted a security clearance, or preparing a technology control plan for non-U.S. personnel. Competing for my time are activities involving the updating of Corporate Security's Web pages, working on the Security Awareness Bulletin, communicating with the Defense Security Service regarding an inspection or visit, reading reports from the High Tech Crime Investigation Association, or disseminating travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State. Coordinating with the FBI and intelligence agencies on Homeland Security issues usually rounds out the day.
Before SRI:
As a 21-year career U.S. Army officer, I held numerous jobs in command and operations. I had two separate tours in combat in Vietnam, where I was awarded two Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge, Aircraft Crewman Wings, and the Air Medal.
Academics:
My undergraduate degree is from Morgan State University, and I did some graduate work. Other academics include training in computer science and business management, language training at the Defense Language Institute, and rural pacification schooling at the U.S. Department of State Training Center.
Why SRI?:
I knew of SRI's outstanding reputation from a project I supported while at Fort Ord. I joined SRI when I retired from the military, and I have been here for more than 20 years. I enjoy working in SRI's environment. I think this is the best company in Silicon Valley.
Inspiration (what motivates you):
I am motivated by my desire to make things better. I was the first Kyle to graduate college, and I have encouraged many of my family members to attend.
Away from the Office:
I like relaxing by the pool and doing crossword puzzles, watching sports on TV, attending Stanford football games, and traveling to the east coast to visit relatives and enjoy Virginia ham and Maryland steamed crabs.
Languages:
I know a little Vietnamese and some Spanish.
Proudest Accomplishment:
I established the first formal security awareness program at SRI, created the very first Security Awareness Bulletin in 1984, led the team that developed SRI's access policies, and coined the phrase "Sensitive Information Recycle" (SIR).
Words of Wisdom for New SRI Team Members:
Learn something new each day and always give your co-workers credit for their efforts and ideas.
