here. Meet members of our team and learn why they joined SRI
you may discover that you would like to join the team, too. Visit

Meet . . . Vera Michalchik
Focus @ SRI:
Research on learning environments
Title and Program:
Research Social Scientist, Center for Technology in Learning
Day in the Life @ SRI:
Wake up early and do some quiet, focused work at home, get the kids off to school while percolating plans for the day, then begin working on a string of meetings and conversations and various deliverables, and squeezing in yoga in the SRI fitness center. I recently made a week-long trip to Siberia, so traveling figures in, too.
Before SRI:
Evaluation research at Stanford (now the Stanford Center for Innovation in Learning), lots of teaching (from little kids to grad students), building libraries in Micronesia, other education-related miscellany, and lots of time abroad
Academics:
Ph.D. in educational psychology, Stanford University
Ed.M. in human development, Harvard University
B.A. in film studies, University of California at Berkeley
Why SRI?
Because it's at the center of so much that's worthwhileideas, projects, clients, partners, people down the hall
Inspiration and Motivation:
Trying to gain insights about our social world and act responsibly on them
Away from the Office:
Family is most of itincluding leading a Girl Scout troop, classroom helping, teaching Sunday School, and shuttling to lessons and activities. My new passion is dance. Jazz mostly, but hip-hop, too. If I were a few years younger I'd be taking capoeira more seriously, but now it's for fun.
Languages:
English. At various times I've been happy dabbling in Turkish, French, Farsi, German, Kosraean, and Spanish.
Proudest Professional Accomplishment:
I'm very happy to see so much attention being given to informal learning in the educational research community now, and I feel part of what's happening. I'm probably happiestand proudestwhen I can help a colleague, student, or client work through a methodological or conceptual problem.
Words of Wisdom for New SRI Team Members:
SRI is a place for people who like to do goodusing their talents to contribute to the efforts, well-being, and success of the research community.
Favorites:
I'm addicted to the blogosphere these days, and otherwise read a lot of wonderful children's literature aloud at bedtime. The last grown-up novel I read was How to be Good, and the best one recently was House Made of Dawn.
