Antiwar demonstrations were in full force until U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam. A constitutional amendment changed the voting age to 18. Mark Spitz won a record seven gold Olympic medals, and an era for two music legends—the Beatles and Elvis Presley—came to an end.

PACKET-SWITCHED RADIO NETWORK: In 1976, SRI established the first connection between two dissimilar networks (i.e., internetworking) using Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) to connect the wired ARPANET and SRI's wireless packet radio network (PRNET), which was the world's first mobile digital radio network. |

INTERNET: In 1977, in what is regarded by many as the first true Internet communication, SRI sent the first TCP-based internetworked transmission between three dissimilar networks, around the world from its mobile packet radio net van in Menlo Park to a host computer at the University of Southern California by way of Norway and England.

On November 7, 2007, a special event marked the 30th anniversary of this landmark demonstration. Read about and view photos of this event. |

NETWORK INFORMATION CENTER (NIC): From 1970 to 1992, SRI served as the first domain name registration clearinghouse and support center for all computer hosts connecting to the ARPANET and Internet. |

AIR COMBAT TRAINING SYSTEM: SRI was part of the government/industry team that designed and fielded the first instrumented training system for pilots to include maneuvering and engagements in a live environment. SRI supported the system's expansion over the next 30 years into other combat missions and military service branches. |

OVER THE HORIZON (OTH) RADAR: For the U.S. military, SRI pioneered technology to detect objects located thousands of miles beyond the horizon or conventional line of sight. SRI's Wide-Aperture Radar Facility (WARF) in California was used for decades of OTH research in aircraft, land vehicle, and missile detection; airfield surveillance; ship tracking; and terrain mapping. |

STEALTH TECHNOLOGIES: SRI developed a method for active radar cross-section reduction to help U.S. military planes avoid enemy radar detection. |

MAGLEV: In the early 1970s, SRI conducted successful demonstrations of a frictionless magnetic levitation system (MAGLEV) for use in rail transportation. |

SCENARIO PLANNING: SRI designed this method of modeling future business conditions, including technology advances, consumer behavior, and socio-economic shifts. It has been used by clients such as Royal Dutch Shell, ARCO, and DuPont. |

CHINA'S INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT: SRI began building relationships with China in 1979, following establishment of the country's open-door policy. SRI has worked with China's political, business, and academic leaders to build relationships with foreign businesses. |

LUNG DISEASE: Groundbreaking SRI research into the environmental causes of emphysema and pulmonary disease helped set regulatory guidelines for air pollutants. |

HALOFANTRINE: This treatment for drug-resistant malaria was developed by SRI for the U.S. Army and marketed by GlaxoSmithKline and the World Health Organization to save countless lives around the world. |

CASH MANAGEMENT ACCOUNT: For Merrill Lynch, SRI created the concept of a convenient, single account combining stock and bond portfolios with money market funds, checking, and credit/debit card services. |

INTERNATIONAL BANKING: SRI established the operational and security parameters for SWIFT, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, which has become a cornerstone of international banking involving 200 countries and trillions of dollars a year. |

SPINDT COLD CATHODE: SRI's efficient cathode produced much higher current densities than traditional cathode ray tubes, and led to today's "instant-on" field emission displays (FEDs) for computers and televisions. |

SOFTWARE-IMPLEMENTED FAULT TOLERANCE (SIFT): SRI designed a formal specification for an ultra-high reliability commercial flight control system. SRI's state machine approach could uncover "Byzantine" faults (those that display asymmetric symptoms). The system ran for years at NASA's Langley Research Center. |

LONGITUDINAL EDUCATION STUDIES: Since 1978, SRI has conducted congressionally mandated longitudinal studies of youth with disabilities to help policy makers and educators improve the U.S. education system. |

PROSPECTOR: For the U.S. Geological Survey, SRI developed this computer-based expert system, one of the world's first, to aid geologists in mineral exploration. It predicted the existence of a hitherto unknown molybdenum deposit in Washington State. |

DIGITAL FAX MACHINE: Under contract to Savin and CBS, SRI designed and built the first prototype of a digital facsimile machine. Ricoh subsequently acquired the rights to the machine. |

9-1-1 EMERGENCY CALL SYSTEMS: SRI played a role in the design, engineering, and analysis of early U.S. implementations of 9-1-1 systems. |

VALS™: SRI designed the Values and Lifestyles program, a market research tool for determining the motivations behind consumer purchasing decisions. Marketed today by spin-off company SRI Consulting Business Intelligence, it is used today by top advertising agencies and consumer product marketers worldwide. |
