ANALYZING GENOMES WITH "PATHWAY TOOLS"
As described in the prestigious journal Science, SRI's "Pathway Tools" software system has been used to analyze a newly sequenced genome, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, producing a comprehensive database of its genome and a computational analysis of its metabolic pathways. Pathway Tools encodes complex scientific theories, leading to a greater understanding of biological systems and improved scientific collaboration. The software system offers the most sophisticated tools available for metabolic pathway analysis of a genome - a crucial component when analyzing the cellular processes that are encoded by an organism's genome. The database will also serve as a collaborative space where other scientists studying A. tumefaciens can share their findings.

SRI HEIGHTENS REALITY IN COMBAT TRAINING
SRI's Deployable Force-on-Force Instrumented Range System, or DFIRST, is helping National Guard armored units prepare for battle. SRI has been awarded an $8.8 million contract by the U.S. Department of Defense to develop DFIRST's low-cost, state-of-the-art training system, which includes combat-training instrumentation that employs wireless and global positioning technology. Wireless NewsFactor recently reported how the U.S. Army National Guard uses DFIRST.

WIRELESS MICROSENSORS MONITOR STRUCTURAL HEALTH
SRI scientists are developing passive, wireless microsensors - tiny devices that can be embedded in buildings, bridges, and vehicles to continuously monitor their "health", from the inside out. The sensors provide an early-warning system for assessing damage before safety issues arise, and can help extend a structure's life by prioritizing the need for preventive maintenance. For clients such as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and California Department of Transportation (CalTrans), SRI has developed a series of wireless sensors called SensorTags, for use on the Space Shuttle, and Smart Pebbles, for use in bridge decks. The devices can also be used to passively monitor conditions in consumer products, such as tires and microwave ovens, and in medical equipment. SRI is seeking an industrial partner for technology licensing to mass-produce these devices.

ABOUT SRI INTERNATIONAL:
SRI is celebrating more than 55 years as the "soul of Silicon Valley". SRI introduced the computer mouse and the foundations of personal computing in 1968, demonstrated the first mobile wireless Internet transmission in 1977, developed life-saving cardiovascular drugs in the 1980s, and designed revolutionary speech recognition systems in the 1990s. SRI International, a nonprofit corporation, was founded as Stanford Research Institute in 1946, and has been independent since 1970. Visit us online!
