"Found in Translation": Interpreting Huge Volumes of Information in Multiple Languages
National security decision-makers and soldiers in the field depend on reliable information. Although large volumes of raw data are being gathered from around the globe in many languages and media (such as speech and text), decision-makers are often unable to identify and extract the information they need. In a new program for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), SRI leads a major, multi-organization effort to develop software technologies that can absorb, analyze and interpret huge volumes of speech and text in multiple languages. Remote Robotic Surgery Demonstrated in Undersea Space Station
Three U.S. astronauts and a physician recently spent 18 days living and working in the NASA Aquarius Underwater Laboratory, the only operational undersea research habitat in the world, to test space medicine concepts and moon-walking techniques. SRI technology aboard the laboratory was used in the first successful demonstration of how telerobotics could one day perform complex surgical procedures in response to emergencies on the International Space Station, the moon, or Mars. In related news, SRI spin-off Intuitive Surgical, maker of the da Vinci Surgical System, reported record revenues in the first quarter of 2006. More information
SRI Helps Ensure Smooth Space Shuttle Lift-Off
NASA engineers are working with SRI to ensure smooth lift-off of the five million-pound Space Shuttle. When the Shuttle is launched, each of the studs that attach the solid rocket boosters to the mobile launch platform must be released in a fraction of a second. Rapid release is accomplished by explosively fracturing the nuts that hold the studs in place. An SRI team is conducting high-rate fracture experiments to help NASA determine how quickly the explosive nuts fracture and disengage the studs. More information

SRI Acquires Clinical Pathology Laboratory
SRI has acquired Quality Clinical Labs (QCL) in Mountain View, California. QCL, the only commercial laboratory of its type in California, performs clinical pathology analyses in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulations. QCL, which will operate under its present name and from its current location, will be integrated into SRI's Biosciences Division, which provides comprehensive preclinical drug discovery and development services. In Development: Oral Formulations for Anti-Radiation Drugs
SRI has received a contract from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, for $931,000 to develop an oral formulation for calcium DTPA and zinc DTPA, two drugs approved for decorporation. Decorporation agents increase the rate of elimination or excretion of absorbed, inhaled or ingested radioactive contaminants. More information

How Well Do U.S. Schools Teach about the Holocaust?
Findings in a yearlong study on Holocaust education practices in U.S. secondary schools show that such education is well-represented in school curricula. SRI led the study for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. More information
Key Findings in Evaluation of Bay Area KIPP Charter Schools
Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP) schools in the San Francisco Bay Area are free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory charter public schools for historically underserved students. The first report in a three-year independent evaluation of the schools by SRI indicates that KIPP students score consistently higher on standardized tests than for comparable public schools -- in a few cases dramatically so. Evaluations of Math/Reading Games in Oklahoma Title I Schools
SRI is evaluating new educational games and simulations for use in targeted 8th- and 9th-grade mathematics, language arts, and science classes. Approximately 2,700 Oklahoma students, predominantly from Title I "Star Schools", will participate. Star Schools are schools that receive federal funding for technology innovation programs that support learning. More information
Access Critical to Global Economic Growth and Improved Human Welfare, Says Landmark Study
Access -- the means of interaction and exchange among people, businesses and nations -- is critical to economic growth and to improving human welfare around the world, according to a new report by SRI's Center for Science, Technology and Economic Development. The study, commissioned by FedEx Corp., is the first comprehensive effort in defining, measuring and analyzing access as a driving force of change and progress. Seventy-five countries are ranked based on their "openness" -- the access of a country, its business, and its citizens to physical items and information from the rest of the world. More information
