SRI International Launches New Malware Threat Center with Tools and Daily Updates for Network Administrators

Menlo Park, CA.,– April 10, 2008– SRI International, an independent, nonprofit scientific research institute, announced today the launch of the Malware Threat Center (http://mtc.sri.com), a website dedicated to fighting malware.  SRI's Malware Threat Center posts daily updates of firewall filters, malware-related domain name system (DNS) names, antivirus statistics, intrusion detection system (IDS) signatures, and malware binary data to help network administrators understand current and emerging computer security threats and provide key network defense information that can be configured into security products to help network administrators fend off the latest malware threats.

SRI's Malware Threat Center provides the most up-to-date information on the most aggressively propagating malware binaries, including historical information, current rate of spread, and signature.  Further, it provides rankings of the most effective antivirus tools (commercial and open-source) against the latest new malware threats.  All of the malware defense information is available for download and is updated daily.

Malware refers to malicious software, such as viruses, worms, and botnets, which are constantly probing and infecting systems around the world.  SRI's Malware Threat Center gathers information from hundreds of malware infections daily and converts this data into filters, watch lists, and IDS signature priorities that can keep a site's firewall, DNS monitors, and IDS systems aware of the latest attacker sources and methods.  In addition, the site provides links to other malware defense software available from SRI, including BotHunter, the Eureka automated malware analysis system, and the highly predictive network blacklisting service.

"SRI encourages network administrators and Internet Service Providers to take advantage of the valuable data available on SRI's new Malware Threat Center," said Phillip Porras, program director, Computer Science Laboratory, SRI International. "By using this information for surveillance and defense, network administrators can help protect the integrity of the systems that they support."
