Hardware Research and
Technology Lab
Developing devices and materials that make an impact
Crossing between disciplines to solve today’s global issues, the Hardware Research and Technology Lab (HRTL) performs applied research and bridges the gap between research and market solutions. We take ideas from ideation to breakthrough technologies that support new business creation. Our researchers have deep expertise that spans all fields in engineering and physical sciences, and we practice as generalists working across disciplines to bring new perspectives to technical challenges.
From ideation to manufacturing
The HRTL delivers projects that address sustainability, climate and energy, sensing and device fabrication, and biodevices. Our researchers solve problems through a wide variety of technology solutions including composites for extreme environments, amorphous and polycrystalline silicon systems, flexible x-ray imaging, compact optical sensing, and more.
Our capabilities span the full innovation pipeline including ideation, modeling and simulation, experimentation and proof-of-concept, prototyping, system building, and small-scale manufacturing, covering technology readiness levels from one to seven.
The division offers a fully developed cleanroom with established processes to design and fabricate a wide variety of active optoelectronic devices and large area thin film devices including thin-film transistors. We support sponsored R&D and product development for clients to prototype novel processing techniques that are transferable to manufacturers. For clients who want to develop and prototype new devices and technologies quickly and cost-effectively, we help develop new processes, build prototypes, and transition technology to manufacturing.
