Performing a wish: desiderative assertions and performativity

Abstract

This talk shows that assertions of hearer or speaker desires can be used to bring about conduct-guiding performative effects, like those induced by performatively used modals, and that in such uses they give rise to diverse types of speech acts, just like imperatives.
