Existing adsorbent options suffer from short lifetimes and inefficient CO2 capture/release cycles, driving up the cost of carbon capture and preventing commercial adoption. We are developing tunable aerogel adsorbents that can capture CO2 with low adsorbent cost, minimal cycling energy, and long adsorbent lifetimes. These adsorbents are made via a polymer aerogel synthesis technology we developed that uses controlled radical polymerization to achieve unprecedented control over the polymer aerogel pore network. Tuning the adsorbent pore structure enables greater access of the active sites to CO2 and improves overall gas transport, boosting performance.
