The Alto personal workstation was created at PARC, which is now part of SRI. Its client-server architecture meant computing would no longer be restricted to the hierarchical world of large, centralized mainframes. This evolving PC would subsequently employ the world’s first bit-mapped display, graphical user interface with windows and icons, WYSIWYG (What You See is What You Get) editor, local area network/file storage, and commercial mouse.
