Anthony van Eyken

Anthony van Eyken, Ph.D., is a recognized expert in the fields of incoherent scatter radars and ionospheric physics, van Eyken joined SRI in 2009, initially as a senior scientific advisor.

From 2003 to 2009, van Eyken was director of EISCAT, the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association, an internationally supported research organization operating three atmospheric research radars and an ionospheric heater for civilian research into high-latitude geospace. He was the organization’s deputy director and science director from 1992 to 2003, and a senior scientist from 1989 to 1992.

He has held research positions at the University of Tromsø, Norway, and the University of Southampton, as well as teaching and research roles at the University Centre in Svalbard and other institutions. He holds a B.Sc. and ARCS in physics from Imperial College London, and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in physics from the University College of Wales.

He is the author or co-author of more than 100 publications and is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. His professional memberships include the Norwegian Academy for Polar Research, the American Geophysical Union, the American Institute of Physics, and the European Geophysical Union. He has served as a guest editor for Advances in Space Research and Annales Geophysicae.
